Math Jacket Champion

February 19, 2016

Today Parker made us so proud by participating in and WINNING the first annual Gerard Math Jacket competition!!!

Several months ago, he tried out for the spelling bee and the Math Jacket competition and qualified for both.  He really didn't want to do either one of them because he hates getting up in front of people and was nervous about competing in front of the entire school.  With some encouragement from us and his teacher, we finally convinced him to try the Math Jacket competition.  (It is like a spelling bee but with math problems instead of words.  The participants are given a mental math problem and have 10 seconds to come up with an answer.)

Parker went into the competition today nervous but confident.  He was competing against 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and his only goal was to make it past the first round.  During the fourth round, almost half of the kids got out and after the next round, it was down to Parker and two other students.  Before we knew it, it was just Parker and one other third grader left!  They went back and forth a few rounds and then Parker answered (8+10)-5x2 correctly to become the champion! He was so excited and we couldn't believe he had beat 23 other kids to win!
Parker wanted Eden and Lily to come watch him compete.  They were so proud of their brother!
Mrs. Greenhaw did a great job creating and organizing the first ever math competition.  We are so thankful for all of her hard work!
We had to go for a celebration treat after school!
Congratulations Parker!  We are so proud of your hard work!  What a wonderful accomplishment!
